Blog Post #6 Grand Summary

In grand the different sources involved in my blogs all pertain to the importance on gaining knowledge of the variety of styles that exist for leading. As I have learned this knowledge is important in becoming a successful leader as the ability to adapt and match the best fit style to a situation or organization is what will have the biggest impact on leading a group towards performance achievements and goals.

The different sources discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each style and in what type of situations they are best used. The sources tend to explain the styles in an interchangeable way implying their validity. As well there are trends within the sources involving repetition of the main styles in leadership. This trend allows me to believe that these are the most frequent styles seen within an organization to lead behaviors and people towards a common goal. These repeating styles include transformational, transactional, democratic, autocratic and laissez faire. Although I have found through research that more styles exist they seem to be an extension of these core styles.

The sources explain that each of these styles are unique and will have different effects under different circumstances. According to the sources the transformational leadership is typically good at motivating employees, but requires high emotional intelligence and communication skills. The transactional leadership style is useful in situations where work needs to be accomplished within a shorter time frame, however lessens creativity due to its direct manner . Democratic leadership is highly valued in innovative industries, but may become overly time consuming under tight deadlines. Autocratic leadership is useful in situations where the leader is highly knowledgeable and is required to make decision in a timely manner, although may create low employee moral due to its lack in collaboration. Lastly the Laissez faire style is useful in circumstances where team members are independent and knowledgeable by helping members feel trusted, but can often lead to chaos due to its lack of management control.

The sources also give advice on tunning in and understanding your own personal style. This is important as being self aware is the first step in the ability to adapt to different situations. Making it the key to becoming a great leader. Tips for this include research on the different styles, taking in feedback and performing self assessments.

In conclusion through this research I have learned strategies that have helped me become more self aware of my personal goals in leadership. As well I have learned the many different styles that exist along with their pros and cons. I now understand how these styles are intended to be used and the downside they can have when used under the wrong circumstances. Furthermore through this I have learned the opportunities from gaining knowledge and the growth it can bring to a leader.
