Blog Post #2 How to Lead: 6 Leadership Styles and Frameworks

 Summary

This article talks about researchers development in the theories around leadership styles. These theories are based off behaviors involved in managing and motivating a group of people. It looks at the differences in styles and how they are used in various settings to accomplish social change and tasks.

Psychologist Kurt Lewin developed the first three major leadership styles. His research evolved around studying school children's response to these styles. This included authoritarian, demographic and laissez-faire. It was found that demographic leadership tended to inspire performance, authoritarian leadership was more productive, but led to less creativity and laissez-faire leadership was the least productive as it lacked regulation. Through this study connections where made between the styles and behaviors. It is important to note this as it can be useful when deciding what method to use depending on an organization or situation.

The article also mentions two other styles that are later developed. They include transformational and transactional. A transformational leader requires high levels of emotional intelligence to promote motivation amongst its group. A transactional leader tends to enforce completion of tasks for compensation. This research is what allows leaders today to make the right decisions in matching a leadership style to the needs and behaviors of an organization.
